Location / Directions
Askham
Set in gentle limestone scenery, Askham
has long been regarded as the regions prettiest village. The main
street's ample verges and fine trees are flanked by an array of picturesque
cottages set at different angles and elevations to form an attractive
avenue extending from the bridge over the River Lowther uphill to
open moorland, dividing for almost its entire length the extended
village green. Askham Hall based on a 14th Century tower, the home
of the 7th Earl of Lonsdale sits at the lower end of the village with
Lowther Castle and the great Estate of Lowther Park nearby.
The village offers two public houses with restaurants and bar meals,
a shop / post office, a 12th Century Church and a heated outdoor swimming
pool and toddler pool with grassed picnic area. (May to Sept.)
With easy access to Lake Ullswater and Haweswater, Askham and Helton
fells, Eden Valley and the Market town of Penrith, the location is
ideally suited for most outdoor activities including sailing, fishing,
shooting, cycling, painting, fell walking or just relaxing and strolling
around the village, through Lowther Park or by the River Lowther.
The location also allows access to other Lakes, tourist areas and
beauty spots in the Lake District National Park, Carlisle, the Border
Region and Hadrian's Wall.
